Bio: Barbara Tisherman lives in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. She started growing orchids in 1971 as the result
of a gift of 3 orchid plants. Quickly hooked, a greenhouse soon followed and her hobby became a small
orchid business within a short few years. In 1977, Barbara became a student judge in Washington when the
center was a Supplemental Judging Center for the Mid-Atlantic Region. Barbara was soon elevated to an
Accredited Judge in 1983. From January 1991 through December 1995, Barbara served as Chairperson for
the National Capital Judging Center.
Barbara has always been very involved with her local orchid society – The Orchid Society of Western
Pennsylvania and is proud to have served as their President. In 1999 Barbara lead a group of lady-slipper
orchid lovers to form a new organization; the Slipper Orchid Alliance, and is currently serving as the
President of that society.
Barbaras Pittsburgh interests include being a member of the Carnegie Museums annual gem and
mineral show and being President of the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of Womens’ American ORTA
Charitable Group that raises money for technological schools for Jewish students throughout the
